You'll spend a day exploring the UK’s biggest science attraction marvelling at groundbreaking inventions that revolutionised our understanding of the universe and discovering the fascinating theories behind them, explained clearly and accessibly by an expert guide. You'll uncover the human stories of visionary scientists and engineers who transformed the world and launched humanity into space.
From the intricate mechanisms of early clockwork devices to the colossal steam engines of the Industrial Revolution, from the primitive valves and wires of the first computers to the spacecraft that brought Tim Peake home, this journey spans time, space, energy, and information, taking you to the frontiers of knowledge.
The Science Museum can pose a challenge. Visitors often aren’t sure what to make of the bizarre and other-worldly bits of apparatus, while the ideas they represent may seem too abstract and complicated. Placing these objects within their proper historical context adds another layer of challenge.

This tour provides the perfect solution. Guided by a seasoned science expert with years of teaching experience, you’ll explore some of the world’s most significant scientific objects up close. Hear the stories of how these innovations came to be, why they matter, and how they shaped the modern world.

You'll uncover fascinating connections and stories:
-
Discover the surprising link between a 16th-century pocket watch and today’s supercomputers.
-
Learn why Galileo is considered the father of artificial intelligence.
-
Hear the scandalous tale of Isaac Newton’s feud with his greatest rival.
-
Find out who locked themselves inside a vacuum pump—and what they were trying to prove.
-
Understand how the secret of the steam age can be demonstrated with a simple squashed plastic bottle.
And you'll marvel at the icons of science and space:
-
Stand in awe before the spacecraft that carried astronauts far beyond Earth.
-
Examine equipment once used by pioneers like James Watt, James Joule, and Alan Turing.
-
Get inches away from an actual piece of the Moon.
Learn the history of science like you’ve never encountered it before, through the objects and people which made it happen.
The day is broken into four sections.

Part One: Time and Motion
You'll learn about the scientific revolution, how the accurate measurement of time was the key to this new Age of Enlightenment and why London was at the heart of its development.
Part Two: Energy
You'll get up close with the dirt and grime of the industrial revolution and be shown how extraordinary human ingenuity was able to capitalise on simple scientific concepts to create the wonderful but fearsome machines of the Age of Steam.
Part Three: Energy
This is literally rocket science – the easy version. You'll hear the story of humanity’s quest to slip the bonds of earth and journey among the stars to other worlds.
Part Four: Information
This explains the path from a chain of Edwardian teashops to the final frontier: machines that can think like humans. You'll hear the story of computing from the difference engine to the mobile phone and AI.
